Description
The Mod Bee
A Mod Bee (short for “Modified Bumblebee”) is a contemporary evolution of the classic Bumblebee surfboard by Campbell Brothers Surfboards. It is designed as an “in-between” shape that blends the easy paddling and wave entry of a retro board with the high-performance capabilities of a modern shortboard.
Design Modifications
Compared to the traditional Bumblebee, which features a wide arc tail, the Mod Bee incorporates specific adjustments to enhance modern surfing styles:
- Narrower Tail Width: The tail width is brought in to provide tighter control in the pocket and a quicker turning radius.
- Modern Nose Options: While the original often featured a “beak nose,” Mod Bees can be shaped with non-beak noses for a more streamlined profile.
- Varied Outlines: Specific iterations include the Racy Bee (a collaboration with Channel Islands and Dane Reynolds) and the E-winged Bumblebee, which uses elevated wings for added maneuverability.
Performance & Configuration
The Mod Bee maintains the signature speed and drive of the Bonzer system while offering more versatility than the original 1970s template.
- Fin Systems: While it typically utilizes the Bonzer 3 or Bonzer 5 setups, it can also be configured as a thruster, twin, or twinzer.
- General Sizing: They are typically ridden shorter than average boards, similar to a “fish,” with a general size range from 5’6″ x 19 1/2″ up to 6’5″ x 22″.
- Bottom Contour: It features the hallmark Campbell Brothers single-to-double concave bottom, which redirects water through the tail area to maximize energy and reduce drag.
